Location Overview
|
Central and largest of the Gambier Islands in French Polynesia, Mangareva is the only gateway to the Pitcairn Islands. The entire group of islands is fringed by a coral reef and the resulting lagoon lends itself well the economy of culturing black pearls, harvesting fish and oysters, and of course, drawing tourists. Visitors may also want to visit the numerous Catholic edifices dating from the nineteenth century, most notably St. Michael's Cathedral. Constructed of burnt limestone and decorated with mother or pearl, it is the largest church in the South Pacific and still active today. |
